From the time Eiffel was little she’s always “softed.”

That used to sound like a made up word to me, because, well… it is a made up word, but now it’s part of my vocabulary. “A softer” and “softing” are in my everyday vernacular.

When she was a toddler she would sneak her big brother’s Wii remote covers, these gummy monstrosities, and rub her thumb over them until she fell asleep. Anything plasticky became a “softer to ‘soft’ on.”
It’s funny how your kids are able to just invent words and practices that suddenly seem normal and commonplace.
I remember hearing a mother once describe how her toddler son would steal her silk underwear from her dresser drawer, because he liked the feel of it, and drag it out during parties and family gatherings, mortifying her. So I always figured, a Wii cover? I’ll take it.

In recent years she’s moved onto remote controls. She rubs all of the identifying marking off of them. She hoards them in her room, usually under her pillow.

Many a night Abrahm will furiously retrace all of Eiffel’s steps to recover an AWOL remote just so we can watch Dateline, assuming we can even figure out which keys are which with no numbers on them.

All of that said, I’ve resigned myself to this nightly nuisance because after all, I’d rather his panties be in a wad than mine.
